END POLIO NOW DAY OCTOBER 28th 2023
David Pritchard, who is the Rotary District of East Anglia Polio coordinator, thanked all volunteers at last Saturday's event.
The Rotary Club of Norwich along with five clubs worked together with (Wroxham BV, Aylsham, Norwich St E, Norwich and GY HR2) with 5 club presidents , the DG, the next DG and at least 2 past DGs. We hope to work together more often in the future. A small number of people are thinking about visiting a Rotary Club for the first time - potential new members. |
The children’s games were quite popular, particularly the ball game and the bubbles and occasionally the game "Disques"! And well done to the 5 Rotarians who assumed the role of Polio Bear over the day and particularly the two bears who danced to Teddy Bear's Picnic with the singers. For those who would like to know, the wonderful Barber Shop singers were called "Fine City Singers" and they would be happy to sing at your event for a small fee, which they will donate to charity.
Although the footfall was low for the Forum on a typical Autumn Saturday, a number of people stopped to talk about Rotary and Polio and some money was donated. We are not expecting much but when it is fully counted, we will share what we made.
If you would like to know more about where we are today with Polio Eradication please visit the website www.endpolio.org
The statistics this year show that so far there have been 9 cases of wild polio, with 6 in a small enclave of Afghanistan and 3 in a small enclave of Pakistan. We are getting closer to the end. But there must be no cases for at least 3 years for a country to be declared polio free.

CLUB FOCUS 2023/2024
In early July each year the new President of a Rotary club is inducted at Handover; and, at its 6 July meeting, Past President Miles Neville passed the chain of office to incoming-President Colin Rymill.
In addition to continuing support for Cuppa Care and the Ho Inclusive School in Ghana, Colin expressed a desire to help address the alarmingly high level of anxiety and mental health issues amongst the young people in the UK. This is not a problem isolated to the UK, it's recognised internationally as a problem that has arisen since the world-wide policies isolated young people from school and friendship groups during Covid lock-downs. The Rotary Club of Norwich already has good contact with schools in and around Norwich and approaches have been made to senior educators to define how we may contribute directly to helping young people – the very future of our nation. With assistance from experts and specialists the Club wants to become directly involved in this major health issue of our time.
Also tentative planning is underway to stage a public performance that draws attention to these major issues and offers alternative ways of mitigating and alleviating these complex issues.

ROTARIANS TOUR OF HISTORIC NORWICH
A few pics from our History walk round Norwich on a beautiful summer’s evening. The walk was ably led by Rotarian Charles Lewis, who kept us entertained with colourful tales of the city’s rich history. We finished the walk with dinner at the Wig and Pen.

ANOTHER YEAR OF BUGGY DRIVING AT THE ROYAL NORFOLK SHOW
Once again, Rotarians provided transport for those that needed it at the show. We received the following note from the producer Charity Manager of the show: “On behalf of the Chairman, Trustees, and all of us here at the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association (RNAA), we write to thank you for your support with this year’s Royal Norfolk Show. We really appreciate you and the Rotary club going above and beyond to help make the show such a roaring success. We really can’t thank you enough for everything that you did for us including taking on the additional car parking buggy duties. You and your team did a most magnificent job”

ROTARIANS GIVE VOICE TO NORFOLK MEN of THE SEA
A small group of members attended the St Peter Mancroft concert given by the Sheringham Shantymen on Friday 14 July. The Sheringham Shantymen comprise a group of local lifeboat men and friends with considerable musical talent and great humour, who have been performing with great gusto throughout the UK and internationally for over 30 years.
|
There's much demand for performances and they limit events to about 30 concerts a year. So the people of Norwich were fortunate in having opportunity to listen and join in with songs of the sea, a topic so dear to the hearts and history of this great county. Those attending thoroughly enjoyed the evening and participated fully whenever encouraged to do so by the group's leaders. There was a standing ovation at the end that demanded the obligatory encore.
The picture shows the performance in full swing in the magnificent church of St Peter Mancroft in the heart of this fine city.
A portion of the proceeds go to the RNLI, a charity steeped in the veins of Norfolk people and which a number of Rotarians have actively supported and collected for over the years. Plans are afoot to increase the number of ad hoc social gatherings of members, so please watch this space and you're very welcome to come and join us at a meeting or social event, or both!

HO SCHOOL, GHANA UPDATES
A lot has happened in the last 6 months at Kekeli! More families are hearing about our centre and new projects are being developed. This year we are collaborating with other organizations in the areas of reproductive health and solar power. We are also excited about the progress we are making with the new Early Childhood Intervention Centre. This has all been possible because of your generous support. We look forward to continuing our work and sharing more wonderful updates.
