YOUTH SERVICE OVERSEAS AWARD

The Rotary Club of Norwich is able to offer Youth Service awards to young people planning a period of voluntary work abroad. Awards are based on the following criteria and will be between £100 and £200. Awards are competitive and evaluated by a club Rotarian around January and July with the decision usually made soon after interview.  
An example of an awardee was Lara who travelled to Nicaragua and worked with Salud Sin Limite, which is the local branch of the Health Unlimited project. During her time in Nicaragua, Lara was helping to prevent HIV among young people through promoting awareness of risky behaviour and methods of prevention, plus encouraging community wide discussions.
Lara was also involved in training young people to continue with the programme. On return to England, Lara gave an excellent presentation of her experiences to the Rotary Club of Norwich.

Eligibility:
Age: 18 - 25 at the time of departing the UK for the intended visit overseas.. We will need to know the following:
- Destination
- Dates of study
- Work involved
- Estimated total cost of study and how funds are to be raised
- Details of transport to, and accommodation in, the place of study.
- Degree of challenge of activities planned
- Future plans after study
- Who has organised the trip (i.e. a teacher, a voluntary or commercial organisation, the student)

- Indicate the value of your work or study to the people and location which you will be visiting
NB. We need to be assured that all safety measures for the trip are in place prior to the award.

Additional Information.
At the time of interview we will need to see written evidence of acceptance of the young person for a trip by a sponsor/supporting organisation

Deadline for Applications
Applicants are asked to submit the online Application in May for a June/July interview or in November for a December/January interview Interviews will occasionally be held outside these times in order to accommodate other commitments but your case needs to be put forward for special consideration.

Awards are between £100 and £200

Confirmation of acceptance of award should be sent to us within 2 weeks of receipt of notification. This should be in writing with confirmation of travel arrangements.

Recipients will be asked to write a short report about their opportunity to explore another country and culture. Following the return to the UK, all awardees will be invited to a club meeting where they will be asked to present their experience to our Rotary club members. We ask that every effort is made to give the post-visit presentation within 3 months of the return to the UK.
