2015/2016 Competition
youth speaks - District 1080 Competition
Saturday 27th February 2016 - Suffolk One Sixth Form College , Ipswich
The district final of the 2016 competition was held at the ONE College in Ipswich. Four teams contested the Intermediate Competition (age 11-13), and three teams competed for the Senior competition (age 14 - 17). Each team consisted of three members - a Chairman, the speaker and a proposer of a vote of thanks. Each speaker was given 6 minutes to talk about their subject, whilst the chair and Proposer were each given two minutes. |
Timekeeping formed part of the scoring, so all teams had one eye on the timekeeping lightbulbs to ensure they kept to their timing.
The Intermediate teams were:
Ipswich High School: Flora Pitt, Emily Akister and Grace Rankin. Their chosen subject was "Is technology affecting our health?"
King Edward Academy V11, Kings Lynn: Ethan Tibbs, Samuel Shipp and Lewis Robertson. Their chosen subject was "Remembrance Day"
Langley School, Loddon: The winners of the Norwich round, team members were Lydia Benjamin, Jessica Stone, Amelia McIntyre and their chosen subject was "Should we have an Academy which preserves the English Language?"
The Perse School, Cambridge: Killian Meissner, Kirill Nezhentsev and Archie Brown. Their chosen subject was "Fracking - Future or Failure?"
All the teams produced excellent presentations, with the Langley School girls giving a particularly humorous presentation. However, the judges decided that overall, The Perse School were worthy winners with their very well thought out and well presented talk on Fracking.
The Senior teams were:
Norwich School: Previous winners of the Norwich round. Charlie Brownlow, Will Tremelling and Gillean Brook. Their chosen subject was "Terabytes to Terminator: The future of Artificial Intelligence"
Royal Hospital School, Ipswich: Thomas Hey, Sophie Atkinson and Lucy Watson. Their subject was "Could we, should we, go to Mars
St Bede's Inter-Church School, Cambridge: Eunji Hong, Julia Robertshaw and Ruby Page. Their chosen subject was "Feminism: A dirty word?"
Once again the standard was very high with some very well thought out arguments, and almost word perfect presentations mostly without notes. The judges decided that the winners were The Royal Hospital School Ipswich with their entertaining and passionate talk on travelling to Mars

Youth Speaks - Norwich round
Wednesday evening, 25th November 2015, saw six teams gathered at Wymondham College to demonstrate their skills in public speaking. Pupils from Wymondham College, who once again hosted the sparkling evening, Norwich High School, Norwich School and Langley School showed us confident performances and entertaining styles. Different topics were chosen by each team and covered a wide range of contemporary questions. For ten minutes the teams, consisting of three members, had to introduce their subject, put a convincing argument for their point of view, and answer a question from the audience. The last speaker gave a summary of the topic and thanked the hosts.
Three judges undertook a very difficult task, weighing up the merits of each team and deciding the eventual winners. The winners of the intermediate section (11-13 years) were a team of girls from Langley College with their humorous but heart-felt topic 'The Challenge of being an Older Sibling'. Norwich School were winners of the Senior section (14-17years) with a wide ranging discourse on the subject ' From Terabytes to Terminator? The future of Artificial Intelligence'. The introduction produced some mirth when the speaker declared 'he needed a robot to help him teach his mother to use her iPad!'
Club President, Colin Rymill, handed out certificates to all those taking part, and prizes to every team.
Our thanks go to Melvyn Elias for hosting the evening at Wymondham College, Ann Lambert, Andrew Heron and Rita Douglas for acting as judges and Estrid Heron for taking excellent photographs of the evening. The teachers of the participating schools also deserve thanks for preparing their teams so well. The two winning teams will now go onto the District Heats being held in Ipswich on 27th February.
The event was organised by Rotarian Mary Beardwood

Rotary Youth Speaks Competition - District Final 14th February 2015
After the success of the local competition at Wymondham College in November, sponsored by The Rotary Club of Norwich, the winning teams, both intermediate and senior from the Norwich School, went to the District Final at Kings Lynn. There was a sizable audience with teams from as far as Cambridge, Saffron Walden and Ipswich competing.
We were very impressed with the intermediate's presentation of their proposal "The humanities a help or a hindrance?" The main speaker was Louis Mian who surely will make a career which requires verbal skills. He was amazing! It was the same proposal that they had put to the audience at Wymondham but they had clearly refined their speeches and we were pleased , but not surprised, when the judges awarded them first place.
All the other teams in the Intermediate section were girls, so the boys from Norwich School helped to redress the balance. The senior team also gave an excellent presentation but the judges gave the award to Ipswich High School. The subjects of the presentations was extremely varied and the standard was very high. The winning teams now go to the Regional Final which will be held at the City of London Boys School on Saturday, 21st of March.
