2015/2016 Events
Thursday 16th June - Evening meeting: Rotarian Gordon Watkins gave a talk about his life as a dentist and being stationed in Germany.
Thursday 9th June - Lunchtime Meeting: The new Lord Mayor of Norwich, Cllr Marion Maxwell, talked to the club. I keeping with a tradition that began in 1922, the newly installed Lord Mayor, Cllr Marion Maxwell, attended Rotary Club of Norwich's lunch meeting on Thursday 9 June.  The Lord Mayor gave a delightfully frank and honest talk about her background and early years in Manchester, growing up in and with the 1960s North West pop culture: she and friends ten pin-bowled with George Best and she dealt with Richard Starkey's (Ringo!) car insurance for his Triumph Herald convertible.  Work resulted in relocating to Norwich in 1985 at the HMSO HQ and then delivering UNISON Training Courses at City College.  Throughout her life Cllr Marion has pursued equality for women but always with good humour and fun, and accordingly enjoyed some rewards and encouragement along the way.  She's a great talker and, importantly, a very good listener!

Lord Mayor, Marion Maxwell, and President Colin Rymill
In her opening remarks Cllr Marion touched on the wide variety of transport modes she had enjoyed in her first two weeks in office, commencing with walking from home to City Hall for the mayor making ceremony on 24 May, frequent taxis, horse and dray to the Roman Catholic Cathedral, National Express coach, planes and ships.  All partaken with large doses of wonderfully delightful good humour.
In closing Cllr Marion gave details of her mayoral charity, 'It's on the Ball', a small local charity that was set up in 2013 to provide support to patients and their families and raise awareness of testicular cancer among men.  Cllr Marion found it hugely amusing that she had actively encouraged women to complete self examination to detect women's cancers and was now enthusiastically supporting a charity that encourages male self examination.
During his introduction, President Colin said it was a great honour and privilege that the Lord Mayor should visit and talk to members.
Members were unable to recall on previous occasions such a litany of jest and good humour throughout the Lord Mayor's talk.  It caused one member to offer, in jest, his comment that her talk was 'A load of old balls!':  the Lord Mayor was delighted and promised to warn her next audience on the response she'd received at her previous event!   This fine City is fortunate indeed to have such  an outstanding Lord Mayor to fly our proud flag!
